When’s the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos?

So, when is the best time to schedule newborn photos?
The ideal window is when your baby is between 7 and 21 days old. At this age, babies tend to be super sleepy and still love being curled up—perfect for creating those soft, timeless portraits in a relaxed studio setting.

I personally love photographing slightly older newborns. Babies tend to feed more efficiently and are often a bit easier to soothe, which can make the session feel more relaxed—especially for first-time parents who are still settling into their new rhythm.

How to Prepare for a Relaxed Studio Session

A few simple steps can make a big difference in how comfortable your baby feels during the shoot:

• Feed your baby before you leave the house. A full tummy helps your little one stay sleepy and settled. Take your time—nursing can be slow, especially in those early weeks, and that’s completely okay.

• Burp thoroughly before buckling baby into the car seat. This helps prevent discomfort during the ride and while we’re gently posing your baby.

These little tips help set the tone for a smooth, stress-free session.

Getting to My Lake Tapps Studio from Seattle

If you're coming from Seattle, my newborn photography studio in Lake Tapps, WA is located about 35 miles south, and the drive typically takes around 50 minutes, depending on traffic.

The easiest route is:
Take I-5 South to WA-167 South, exit at Stewart Road SW, and follow signs to Lake Tapps Parkway SE.
Coming from Renton? You can take WA-167 South directly for a similar drive time.

Along the way—especially if you're passing through Lakeland Hills—you’ll find easy access to Starbucks, Haggen grocery store, and Legendary Doughnuts, which can be handy if you need a quick stop or coffee before the session.
